Brand entropy score

Entropy is a measure of disorder. A brand entropy score applies that idea to brands: how much drift, contradiction, and noise have crept into the story a brand tells. Left unmeasured, brand entropy rises on its own, which is exactly why the Net Entropy Score exists.

The problem: brands drift toward disorder

Every new page, campaign, product line, and partner adds a chance for the brand's story to fragment. Without active maintenance, a brand naturally accumulates entropy: the homepage says one thing, a landing page says another, an old promo lingers, a sub-brand blurs the identity. Nobody decided to be inconsistent; it just drifted.

The cost is that the brand becomes harder to understand and trust, for customers and increasingly for AI systems summarising it. Disorder is the default state; coherence is the thing you have to spend energy to keep.

Why brand health dashboards miss entropy

Awareness, recall, and sentiment trackers measure outcomes, not the internal disorder that produces them. They can all look stable while the brand's story quietly fragments underneath, until the fragmentation finally drags an outcome down.

Entropy is a structural property of the story itself, the amount of contradiction and noise across surfaces. To manage it you have to measure the disorder directly, not just its downstream effects.

A simple example

A retailer that started as one brand now sells its own line, resells partner brands, and runs a third sub-label, with the homepage leading on a partner rather than itself. Each addition was rational. Together they raise the brand's entropy: a first-time visitor cannot tell, in one screen, what the brand primarily is.

A brand entropy score makes that drift visible as a number, so the team can decide which single story to lead with and bring the disorder back down.

Illustrative, anonymised. Directional read of public signal.

The Net Entropy Score

Net Entropy Score (NES) is the measurement of brand entropy, framed as a net of order minus disorder. Higher coherence and lower contradiction mean a healthier, lower-entropy brand; drift, unproven claims, and identity confusion raise entropy and pull the score down.

NES reads public signal (the website first, then reviews and news), so brand entropy can be tracked over time and compared across brands without an internal audit.

How brand entropy is scored

NES scores ten components: five that represent order (message clarity, trust signals, customer-promise consistency, reputation evidence, voice coherence) and five that represent disorder (identity confusion, trust drift, audience confusion, risk signals, operational dissonance). The net of the two, expressed 0 to 100 on the website layer, is the brand's coherence, the inverse of its entropy.

Each component is read from the brand's own surfaces with quoted evidence, so a rising entropy score can always be traced to the specific contradictions causing it.

Common questions

Frequently asked

What is a brand entropy score?

It is a measure of the disorder in a brand's story: how much drift, contradiction, and noise have accumulated across its surfaces. The Net Entropy Score (NES) measures it as a net of order minus disorder, expressed 0 to 100 on the website layer.

Why does brand entropy rise on its own?

Every new page, campaign, product, and partner adds a chance for the story to fragment. Without active maintenance, contradiction accumulates. Coherence is the state you have to spend effort to keep; disorder is the default.

Is brand entropy the same as brand consistency?

They are two sides of one measure. High consistency means low entropy. NES expresses the coherent, low-entropy end as a higher score.

How do I measure my brand's entropy?

Run a free scan. NES reads your public pages and returns a coherence score with a component breakdown, so you can see exactly where disorder has crept in.
